A Bit More About Each Practice…

Flexibility

The popular current western view is that we need to be a hyper-flexible fitness model to practice physical (asana) yoga poses. But this could not be farther from the truth! These practices are accessible to all levels of physical ability and we will adapt postures to your specific needs and where you are today. We’ll use a system of passive tension, myofascial release, and breathwork to increase mobility and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system response, to release muscle tension and increase mobility.  


Mindfulness

One of the clearest definitions of mindfulness that I have found is from  Diana Winston from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, “Paying attention to present moment experience with open curiosity and a willingness to be with what is.” But the question remains… How do we do this?! Mindfulness is a simple concept that is the most difficult to implement. When our nervous systems are already overstimulated and overwhelmed, bringing ourselves back to the present moment can be even more difficult. Through practice we will learn to set intentions, direct our attention with awareness, and reexamine the relationship we have to the world around us.


Meditation

When we sit down to meditation sometimes it feels impossible to clear our minds and let go of our thoughts. We rehash conversations, things not said, missed opportunities, struggles we’re having in our relationships… the list goes on. Maybe we feel we’re too busy, we don’t have a quiet space, or we can’t stop thinking, but there are many types of meditation and there is not a “one size fits all” practice. But is the practice of meditation really about clearing our minds of everything? World renowned meditation teacher Pema Chodron says, “ You are the sky. Everything else is the weather.” It is completely normal to have a busy mind and through a meditation practice we learn how to form a friendship between the two. 


Marma

Frustrated, worried, stressed? There is a  marma point for that! Marma is a simple, natural and safe therapy that works with the subtle energy or prana that flows through us all. In Ayurveda all human emotions are associated with certain bodily organs; applying steady pressure to marma points allows us to both strengthen and revitalize our body and rejuvenate and release our blocked energies. This practice is one that you can easily implement into your daily routine and it works well as a self-treatment because you are in control of the pressure applied to your own body.


Breathwork

There are many ideas currently about breathing exercises, what they are and how to use them. It is common knowledge that many breath practices bring awareness to calm the mind, increase vitality, and balance our whole body systems. But not all practices and techniques are suited for all types of nervous systems or appropriate for all situations. The Highly Sensitive nervous is unique and benefits from practices that are tailored to our individual and unique needs.  


Nutrition

Learning to listen to what our bodies need vs. what they want is an essential component of our overall health. Mindful and humane eating awakens our inner vibrancy, increases awareness of our physical body and deepens our connection to the earth. The what, how, and when of eating is important, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. Learn to quiet your mind and listen to and trust your body.
